The Jetta is the most affordable model offered by Volkswagen, but that doesn't mean it's a low-end car—quite the opposite, in fact. Over the years, this German sedan has become more refined, and its value for money is impressive. The Volkswagen Jetta fits most budgets and doesn't make many compromises. It's one of those rare compact sedans that appeals both to the heart and the head.

Volkswagen has made a few updates to the Jetta lineup for 2025, particularly in terms of exterior styling and dashboard design. The car now looks more elegant and carries a less monotonous personality, something that had often been criticized in the past. New wheel options and paint colors are also on the menu for 2025. As for me, the most radical change is also the only downside to this update: the manual transmission is no longer available with the 1.5-liter engine.

Trims and Pricing

The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta comes in three trim levels, starting with the Trendline, which now has a base price of $28,460—a price hike explained by the removal of the manual gearbox. However, for that amount, you get stylish 16-inch wheels, heated front seats, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Next up is the Comfortline trim, priced at $30,860. This version comes with enhanced features and many additional options for a small price difference. Finally, there's the Highline version, which offers a more premium finish with 18-inch wheels, ambient lighting, and a sunroof. Its base price is $34,860. The sporty GLI version is offered in a single fully-loaded configuration, starting at $37,660—a very reasonable price considering the level of performance it delivers.

Segment and Competition

Compact sedans have seen a slight resurgence in popularity over the past few years, thanks to models like the Volkswagen Jetta. More comfortable and versatile than ever, this German sedan also has a very attractive starting price. While the Jetta competes against some heavyweights in its category, it certainly holds its ground.

Rivals: Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Kia K4, Mazda3, Nissan Sentra, Subaru Impreza, Subaru WRX, Toyota Corolla.

Design and Technology

The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta is one of my favorite cars in terms of design. It manages to be elegant while still incorporating a hint of creativity. The German automaker did a great job this year with its selection of wheels and color options.

The interior is modern and very comfortable. The tech experience is quite appealing—especially the ambient lighting, which gives the impression of a high-end vehicle.

Performance

The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta offers two powertrain options. First, there's a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in all regular trims of the sedan. This engine delivers 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, the manual transmission has been dropped from this engine lineup for 2025, leaving only the 8-speed automatic.

If you still want a manual gearbox, you'll have to go with the sportier GLI version—which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The GLI is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. If you're not a fan of manuals but still want that extra power, the Jetta GLI is also available with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Regardless of engine choice, front-wheel drive is the only drivetrain option.

Weaknesses

The starting price has increased significantly due to the removal of the manual transmission.

Strengths

It's an elegant car with a design that ages well. It's very comfortable, especially for those who spend long hours on the road. The GLI version's performance is noteworthy, but it's the car's balance that truly stands out—it remains very civilized. Even the base version of the Jetta is a pleasure to drive.

Signature Trait

The Volkswagen Jetta is essentially an Audi dressed for Sunday, and that's a good thing. It's a solid car with a refined driving experience at a more than reasonable price.

Final Word

The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta is a car that lets you have fun without breaking the bank. It's a smart choice.
